Starting Age – Instrument Choice
During the past several years the “D-12 clarinet” which was designed for the smaller hands of children has earned its fix place in the curriculum of many music schools. That means children at the age of eight can start with or switch to the clarinet, either after a preparatory phase e.g. recorder lessons or right away without any previous experience. (this type of clarinet has the regular Bb-tuning and can be used in ensembles or orchestras without limitations)
Thanks to the easy to play reed material you will quite soon have a relatively good sound. We will provide you with information on leasing or loan instruments in the area around Mannheim, Heidelberg, and Ludwigshafen. After approximately one and a half to two years students are usually able to switch to an normal standard size keys.
We generally recommend to seek advice before purchasing a clarinet, even to older children, adolescents, and adults: The market offer is relatively confusing to laypersons and a mispurchase will most likely end up with disappointment and further costs. We would like to spare our students from this kind of experience.
Basics
As with all wind instruments the most important thing is a clean sound. The clarinet lessons at TonArte focus on this particular aspect. A well established low range provides the basis for the learner to produce the clean high notes. Exercises specifically designed for this purpose help the students to develop a balanced intonation and dynamic application of clarinet techniques. Especially the training with piano accompaniment helps to develop these skills from the firs few lessons on. The acquisition of a proper tongue technique, along with e deeper understanding of finger exercises are and essential part of the clarinet lessons.
Styles and Ensemble Work
Apart from classical clarinet music we attach great importance to other styles such as modern jazz, swing, and Latin music. Apart from the romantic oriented traditional sounds we gladly teach modern styles to our interested students. Many diverse etudes, duets, pieces with piano accompaniment, up to form oriented improvisation to CD backing tracks build the core of our clarinet lessons. Complementary ensemble lessons add fun and variety. Advance players also have the opportunity to form classical, rock, pop, or jazz ensembles/bands at TonArte Mannheim.
Clarinet Lessons for Adults
Because of the special lip technique the clarinet belongs to the more practice intensive instruments. Adults, oftentimes working, should spend time to practice on at least three to four days a week in order to relatively soon make a decent progress. Mostly half an hour adequate. Also the appropriate environment (apartment, working schedule) has considerable influence. Also worth mentioning is the holistic physical, and respiratory aspect. Correct and successful practicing has a positive influence on body posture and health. In terms of a relaxed and motivated learning we also consider an intensive coaching and consultation concerning the material choice(instrument, mouthpiece, reed) very important.
