What is the right age to start with the instrument?
You can start learning at an age of 8 to 9 years.
What do I need at home?
Contrabass, bow, colophony
What do I need to bring to my lessons?
If necessary bow, contrabass, teaching material by agreement.
The so-called 3/4-Size is the standard size ( scale 103 – 105 cm/40,55'-41,34'). There are also 4/4 basses which is, however, sort of an over-size and not that easy to handle for everyone due to the extra long scale. In addition there are smaller sizes for children.

What do I have to consider upon purchase?
We recommend to consult an instructor or another expert first.

In General:
The four strings of the contrabass are tuned in fourths (E-A-D-G) as opposed to the other violin style instruments which are tuned in fifths. Some contrabasses have a fifth string, a full third lower than the e-string. For the contrabass as a solo instrument often so-called solo strings are used. Here each string is tuned a full step higher ((F#-H-E-A) which though higher tension and thinner profile results in an overall higher pitch. The bow is held either, as with the violin, in the overhand grip (Italy, France, England, U.S.A.) or in the underhand grip (Austria, Germany). In classical music the contrabass is mainly bowed while in jazz it usually is plucked (pizzed from Ital. “pizzicato”).
The contrabass is played in upright position on special seats or standing. The height adjustable spike is used to adjust the instrument to the players height. Many people think that you need huge hands to play the contrabass. But that is not necessarily true. There are many bassists who are of smaller stature.
