Ensembles
A smaller group of performers is referred to as an ensemble. There are vocal ensembles, all instrumental ensembles and mixed ensembles.
Typical of ensembles is the high degree of responsibility and competence that lies with each member. The latter is often reflected in their abilities as soloists. The opposite is represented by larger groups such as choirs or orchestras.
Very often ensembles do not have a conductor, but are lead by an ensemble member (e.g. the concertmaster) who fills the position of a leader. Sometimes the ensemble has no distinct leader and the members make their decisions together. Musical ensembles that are currently in the public eye are mostly referred to as bands.
