What is the right age to start with the instrument?
Children can start learning the instrument at an age of 8 years.
What do I need at home?
The instrument, a music stand, sheet music, and a metronome if necessary.
What do I need to bring to my lessons?
The instrument, sheet music, a manuscript book if required.
Does the instrument come in different sizes?
There is a children's size for smaller children and there are curved head joints. On this matter you should seek the advice of your music instructor. As your child grows the curved head joint can be replaced with a standard one without any problems. (The curved head joint is used to bring the body of the flute closer to the child's body in order to avoid a strain of the right arm and especially the wrist.)

What do I have to consider upon purchase?
You should seek the advice of your music instructor beforehand. Manufacturers such as Pearl or Yamaha offer nickel silver flutes ranging from 500 to 600 €. Flutes with a silver head joint are available from 800 to 1000 €.

In General:
As with all wind instruments make sure that your child is able to handle the instrument breathing-wise. Equally important is the regularity of the teeth. An overbite could be a disadvantage. A retainer, however, is not necessary an obstacle.
