What is the right age to start with the instrument?
Playing on an percussion instrument is the most natural way to make music. There are no age restrictions. However, actual music lessons are recommended for children at the age of 8.
What do I need at home?
A training instrument e.g. congas, bongos etc.
What do I need to bring to my lessons?
An instrument by agreement.
Does the instrument come in different sizes?
There are three different conga sizes. The quinto is the smallest and also the one that is tuned the highest. In addition there is the conga and the lowest one the tumba. Typically these drums are played in pairs (conga-quinto or tumba-conga). I recommend the second combination because of the wider range the second combination covers. |
What do I have to consider upon purchase?
Of course there are conga pairs in all price categories. The price range starts with 150 € and has no limit in the upper price classes. The main difference lies in the materials used for the fabrication (wood, glass fiber...). Good workmanship also stands for a good sound. Equally important are the drumheads because having to buy two better drumheads means extra costs of approx. 100 €. The stands are usually included as accessories. Bags, however, are rarely included in the delivery
The typical price for a new pair of congas lies at approx. 200 €.
In General:
Both individual lessons and workshops first deal with different stroke techniques (slap, bass, open, muffled etc.) and conga rhythms such as the tumbao. Then the courses continue with rhythmic basics (fourths, eights...), rudiments(fundamental patterns as the basis for improvisation), and more advanced Latin-American basic rhythms such as samba, calypso, cha-cha, mambo... |
