In General:
The viola is a bowed string instrument. While it is similar to the violin, the technique required for playing viola has many differences. One of them is that the viola is played "on the arm"(Viola da Braccio). Basically, even though it has a shorter scale length, the viola is a bigger version of the violin and is a perfect fifth lower. The open strings are tuned to c-g-d'-a'.
