1. Drum Workshop with Patrick Metzger
Nowadays, to many students music classes at public schools have become increasingly boring. This is especially true for students who are not interested in music or simply do not play an instrument. At least that was the case during my time in school.
Oftentimes the students' participation leaves much to be desired and the teachers are clueless since they have to adhere to the curriculum. So what can you do about it?
Many music teachers do not have a special training in rhythmics, drums or percussion instruments and oftentimes they only teach the basics of music theory. Many of these school teachers play the guitar or the piano and do make use of these instruments in class. They also often conduct the school choir.
However, these days' students do not sing along anymore because they are simply not interested.
That was one of the reasons for me to offer drum clinics at schools.
My workshop is about giving students a different understanding of the instrument than the one they have gained through text books, their favorite bands, or television.
The setup of a modern drum set, terminology, grip, notation, functions of a drummer in a band, different styles, their rhythmic differences, and developments from jazz through rock to modern pop music.
I always try to incorporate and to complement the current subject matter of a music class. In consultation with the respective music teacher this has always worked very well so far.
Sometimes I let students play the drums themselves or make themselves familiar with the drum sticks. Rhythmic clapping exercises in groups or similar body percussion inserts are quite popular in the lower grades (fifth or seventh grade). The older students can be kept in good spirits with a couple of jokes and funny anecdotes.
How does such a course look like?
I simply take over the class during a music lesson. I visit the school on one or several days with my drum kit, complement the subject matter (in consultation with the respective teacher), answer the students' questions, and give examples on the drum set.
Example: “Rhythm” (7th grade curriculum), or “The Origin of Rock 'n' Roll” (8th grade curriculum)
References:
I successfully conducted my workshop at the following schools:
- 2004 Realschule Schönenberg-Kübelberg (see reference letter)
- 2005 Gymnasium Landstuhl
- 2005 Gesamtschule „Rothenfeldschule“ Waldmohr
- 2005 Gymnasium Kirchheim-Bolanden
From the schools mentioned above I received very positive feedback and all of the music teachers asked for further collaboration. In addition it was always something special for the students.
Kind regards,
